Arsène Wenger is a winner and winners, naturally, love to succeed. This is why no matter what the margin of defeat would've been at the Emirates in the first-leg Round of 16 match against Bayern Munich, Le Professeur wouldn't have been able to help himself from keeping one eye on it.
The whole world and his wife knew Arsenal's quarter-final match against Everton was their best chance of ending their nine years without silverware.
Despite this, Yaya Sanogo was preferred to Olivier Giroud and there was no place forTomas Rosicky.
I've never heard Wenger, during his eighteen years with the club, heap praise on a player so continuously like he does with Rosicky; he adores the bloke. The problem with Rosicky is that he cannot play three games in seven days, so Wenger saves him for the bigger games.
To the fans, the Everton game was the biggest one of Arsenal's season but Wenger's decision to not include the forward-thinking Rosicky tells you exactly which game the Frenchman is eyeing.
If Rosicky doesn't start in the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich, I'll...well, I won't do anything but you get my point.
There's a lot of rumours flying around about Giroud and talk of how Wenger is punishing the France international for his off the field misdemeanors. Who knows? Maybe he is but I doubt Arsène would be that petty.
The inclusion of Sanogo in the starting line-up for our three biggest games of the season hasn't backfired at all. Against Liverpool he impressed with his hold-up play and runs into the channels, versus Bayern he tormented them for the opening 15-20 minutes and then, well, we all know what happened.
Everton was probably his most disappointing performance in an Arsenal shirt but the young striker, despite imitating bambi on ice at times, has shown he can become a real talent and asset to this squad.
I don't think we will see Sanogo starting anymore games this season and Giroud's absence in the big games will have no doubt refreshed and fired-up the big man for the business end of the season.
By the time we face Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup semi-final, I'm 99.9% certain we won't have the lure of the next round of Champions League flirting with Wenger's winning mentality. Therefore, we will see the strongest possible Arsenal starting XI (hopefully) taking us to a final.
